Project Overview

Photonics Leaders program curriculum supports and expands upon local state, national and international science, technology, engineering and mathematics education standards. The investigations of photonic concepts and internship experiences equip participants to behave and think like real scientists.

Goals:

  • Guide and prepare students for the success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs in higher education.
  • Develop a deeper and richer understanding of science, mathematics and technology careers.

Objectives:

The Photonics Leaders program objective is to equip students with skills necessary to complete STEM programs at the university or college level by:

  • Creating mentoring and training relationships with scientists, engineers, statisticians and system engineers
  • Exposing students to the rigor of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers through internships.

Activities:

  • Investigate light and robotics through the Active Physics curriculum.
  • Model skills of the world of work as scientists and engineers in summer internships.
  • Use computer software for presentations, lab reports and investigations.
  • Carry out cooperative photonics research projects.
  • Presents at science meetings, orientations and symposiums.
  • Participate in career planning and college preparation sessions

Program Requirements:

Photonics Leaders program is open to students with a:

  • 3.0 grade point average.
