aStudent Symposium

The Bennett’s Millpond Project is a unique adventure for the participating high school teachers and students in the four counties that neighbor the Millpond. Each research team learns about the nature of scientific inquiry as it applies to the real-world setting of Bennett’s Millpond. Each team also learns the value of communication in science to enhance the research project.

An important part of “doing” science is the sharing of experiences and results with other professionals and with the general community. The Bennett’s Millpond Project supports ways in which student researchers share their work with the public. Many of our students work directly with other classrooms in their respective high schools sharing lessons on basic water quality. Several Millpond students have been invited speakers at community events and for local clubs. Each spring, theBennett’s Millpond Student Symposium is held to highlight the work of the student researchers and showcase local environmental information. During the symposium, each student formally presents his research outcomes to an invited audience of community members, representatives from local wildlife agencies, university personnel, local school administration, teachers and interested students.

Follow our yearly progress with links to downloadable data, modules and suggestions for self-directed learning, and other ideas about starting a local community based learning project at your school. Plan on attending our student spring symposium to be a part of our learning community. Dates for the spring student symposium are posted on this site.

Student Symposium 2006 will be held spring 2006. Contact Colleen Karl if you would like to attend.
