Bennett’s
Millpond Academy Summer 2003
“I
have lived on this pond all my life, and never have enjoyed
seeing the pond for an entire 24 hour cycle…. the overnight
experience (the night walk and the sunrise canoeing) was amazing
and added to my understanding of the pond community….”
- Student
The 2003
Bennett’s Millpond Summer Academy is the beginning of
a yearly event at the Albemarle Learning Center in Edenton,
North Carolina. The week of programming was designed to bring
together the team of teachers, new student researchers and returning
students for special learning and team interaction. We welcomed
our new students into the program and provided them with expert
mentoring from our returning students and professional educators.
Throughout the week, the teams revisited technology methodology,
tried out new equipment, and worked with soil, wildlife and
GPS specialists. Team interaction skills were reinforced through
an online discussion forum, an overnight camping experience
with a sunrise canoe excursion on the Millpond and focused citizenship
discussion on environmental preservation. The group examined
data collection and data entry methods in preparation for their
sampling responsibilities.s
