About Expanding Your Horizons

On Wednesday, March 5, 2008, the 14th annual Expanding Your Horizons conference will be sponsored by NC State University on our campus from 8:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. This career conference is designed for seventh grade girls from North Carolina. The majority of young women in public schools fail to take the higher level science and math courses needed to enter science, engineering and mathematics fields in college. Expanding Your Horizons is designed to expose seventh grade girls to successful role models in the science, engineering and mathematics fields. As a professional woman in the Research Triangle area working in one of these related fields, we encourage you to participate in this conference.

The goals of the Expanding Your Horizons conference are to increase young women's interest in mathematics, science and engineering; to foster awareness of career opportunities for women in mathematics, science and engineering related fields; and to provide students with an opportunity to meet and form personal contacts with women working in traditionally male occupations

The conference offers hands-on workshops in the morning and career sessions in the afternoon. We are looking for women volunteers to conduct the 50-minute hands-on workshops in a science, mathematics or engineering area for about twenty girls in the concurrent morning sessions (9:50 - 10:40 a.m. and 10:55 - 11:45 a.m.). Following a break for lunch (provided by the conference), the afternoon plenary session will begin at 12:40 p.m. Engaging career sessions introduce participants to women in science, engineering and math related fields and encourage them to consider new career paths.

We hope you will participate in the conference this year. Please fill out the workshop leader form if you can help us with a hands-on workshop or fill out the volunteer guide form if you would like to help in other ways. You may call The Science House at 919-515-9403 or email Janet Bailey if you have any questions.

Thank you for your contribution to the Expanding Your Horizons conference. Working with seventh grade girls is an investment in the future!

Best wishes,

The EYH 2008 Steering Committee
