A Little Bit of History
The earliest and simplest form of a sundial was the shadow stick.
One of the human race’s earliest achievements in marking the passage of time.
Used by Egyptians as early as 1500 B.C.
Actually mentioned in the Old Testament, which could have been used as early 730 B.C.
Used by Greeks and Romans, the indicator on the sundial that casts the shadow is still called by the Greek work “gnomon”(pointer).
Later on, the Arabs developed more complex and accurate sundials.
Prior to the 17th Century, sundials were still being used by the vast majority of the public, even with other methods of telling time at hand.
