Study of the Relationship Between Bicycle Seat Heights and Muscle Activity in the Legs

Research By: Matt Sherman, Chris Gorges, and Jimmy Lassiter

The main muscles at work in cycling are the quadriceps and hamstrings in the upper leg, and the strocnemius and soleus in the calf.  These muscles contract in a sequence, creating the pedaling action.  We created and performed an experiment to study some of the relationship between muscle activity in the legs of a rider and the height of the bicycle's seat.
