Kudzu: Misunderstood Weed
for high school biology and environmental science

Goals and Objectives

The goal of this project is to introduce to students to an invasive species common to North Carolina and use scientific visualization skills to investigate methods for identifying and removing the plant.

Objective 1: Answer basic questions about kudzu, its history and methods of removal.

Objective 2: Use the ImageJ software to visualize kudzu in orthophotos.

Objective 3: Use a spreadsheet to analyze cost data for kudzu removal.

Objective 4: Prepare and present a proposal for kudzu removal.

During the course of this unit, each group should produce the following products:

  • Modified orthophotos (using ImageJ) that allows students to better visualize the area infested with kudzu.
  • Measurements of the infested area in the above photos.
  • A spreadsheet calculatiing the cost for 4 methods of kudzu removal.
  • A proposal to remove the kudzu in the observed area.
