Glossary Brightness - A measure of the overall intensity of the image. The lower the brightness value, the darker the image; the higher the value, the lighter the image will be. Contrast - The difference between the brightest (maximum) and darkest (minimum) parts of an image. Look Up Table - The table of colors an image contains. Orthophoto - a photograph of the earth's surface in which geographic distortion (due to the curve of the earth, camera tilt and other factors) has been removed. Pixel - a combination of the words 'picture element'. A digital picture is made up of tiny squares. If you enlarge a picture big enough you can see these squares or pixels. Usually, the more pixels in a picture, the sharper it will be. Significant Figures - The digits in a measurement that are reliable. 8 bit - In an 8 bit image, each pixel is represented by 8 bits of data. Bit stands for "binary item" and is a single piece of data with two values - either a 1 or a 0. This means there are 28 or 256 different combinations of 1s and 0s in 8 bits. This means that our image can display up to 256 different colors.
