Chemistry On The Road

The Western Regional Satellite Office of The Science House is pleased to announce the development of two Chemistry On The Road demonstration shows. Each 1- 1.5 hour show is appropriate for middle or high school science classes and is restricted to 30 students per show.

MatterMaterial Matters

This "materialistic" demonstration show explores the states of matter and exemplifies some fascinating physical and chemical properties. Solids, liquids and gases are demonstrated with dry ice and liquid nitrogen, while the plasma state is investigated through the use of vapor tubes. Physical properties such as  shape, phase change, and magnetism are represented with intriguing toys. Chemical properties such as reactivity and flammability are portrayed through a variety of spectacular chemical reactions. Demonstrations include:

star Acid Breath (Formation of acid rain)
star Colorful Columns (Acid/base changes with a variety of indicators)
star Burning bubbles and the Tornado Of Fire (Combustion)
star Genii in the bottle (Production of a gas)
star Red, White, and Blue (Color changes)
star Iodine clock and an oscillating clock (Reaction rates)
star and many more ...

ylwPolymer Productions
A prolific profusion of polymers are presented in this interactive demonstration show!
Both natural and synthetic polymers are investigated as nylon, polyurethane and slime are produced.  Polymerization reactions are discussed as well as processing methods. Additives such as plasticizers and cross-linking agents are demonstrated in addition to special water-absorbent or water-rellent properties. During the show, students explore the various polymers contained in their polymer exploration kit. Teachers receive directions for several classroom activities as well as sources of polymers with unique properties. Demonstrations include:

starFlash Paper
starThe needle through the balloon trick
starWater-Loc
starOobleck
starGhost Crystals
starDisappearing Peanuts
starBouncy balls
starMagic Sand
