The
Northeastern Satellite Science House, located in Edenton,
extends the services and outreach programs of The Science
House into the northeastern counties of North Carolina.
Geographically, this consists of all the schools to the
east of I-95 and to the north of the Albemarle Sound. The
Northeastern office is housed at the Albemarle Learning
Center, a local non-profit dedicated to promoting local
people and places as educational resources. At the ALC
site, we have access to lab and classroom space. The ALC
also provides access to canoes, a nature trail, and the
adjacent Bennett's Millpond. These resources facilitate
the offering of environmental-related activities to students
and teachers.
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute provided the major initial source of our funding to implement "Science and Technology from the Science House". The three-year program began in the summer of 1999. The program provided two weeks of summer instruction on how to use calculator based labs (CBL) and microcomputer based labs (MBL) to teachers throughout the northeast region. This was followed by a three-day program during the summer of 2000. As part of the program, the participating teachers are permitted to use two lending sets of equipment along with delivery and ongoing support for the duration of the funding.
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute currently provides the support for the Bennett’s Millpond Environmental Learning Project in Chowan County, which brings together teams of teachers and students from four northeastern North Carolina counties for extended research on a coastal millpond. The Northeast Regional Satellite Office continues to support local schools and teachers through inquiry-based classroom activities, CBL equipment for loan, and specialized state and local workshops.
