Bennett's Millpond Project
Place Based Learning Conference
Directions

The Northeastern Satellite Science House, located in Edenton, extends the services and outreach programs of The Science House into the northeastern counties of North Carolina. Geographically, this consists of all the schools to the east of I-95 and to the north of the Albemarle Sound. The Northeastern office is housed at John A Holmes High School.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute provided the major initial source of our funding to implement "Science and Technology from the Science House". The three-year program began in the summer of 1999. The program provided two weeks of summer instruction on how to use calculator based labs (CBL) and microcomputer based labs (MBL) to teachers throughout the northeast region. This was followed by a three-day program during the summer of 2000. As part of the program, the participating teachers are permitted to use two lending sets of equipment along with delivery and ongoing support for the duration of the funding.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute currently provides the support for the Bennett’s Millpond Environmental Learning Project in Chowan County, which brings together teams of teachers and students from four northeastern North Carolina counties for extended research on a coastal millpond. The Northeast Regional Satellite Office continues to support local schools and teachers through inquiry-based classroom activities, CBL equipment for loan, and specialized state and local workshops.

    • Inquiry-based Classroom Activities – Local work with teachers and community groups using technology to enhance and complement existing classroom objectives. This office has the resources to assist with Advanced Placement laboratory exercises with probeware, preparation for regional and state competitions in science, community project design for place-based learning, environmental field experiences and Geographic Information System (GIS) applications.

CBL loaner equipment– local schools can readily borrow a variety of probes, LABPRO interfaces and calculators for classroom exploration and hands-on science experiments.

    • Specialized State and Local Workshops – the Northeast office offers environmental field trips to the Bennett’s Millpond area for local school systems, beginning and refresher workshops for local teachers in data collection and scientific design using probeware, and statewide workshops in GIS basics and GIS curriculum integration. Contact Colleen Karl for more information.

Directions to the Northeast Satellite Office

    • Travel along Highway 17 towards Edenton, North Carolina.

    • Exit off Highway 17 on NC Highway 32 (exit number 227), travel towards town heading south. From Elizabeth City, turn left as you exit off the Highway 17. From Raleigh, turn right at the exit off Highway 17.

    • Travel on NC 32 (Virginia Road) until you reach the Shell Station on your left. This is a short distance, less than half a mile from the interstate.

    • Turn right at this junction, on to Broad Street, since the road no longer goes straight.
    • Pass the fire station on the left, then pass the high school also on your left. Turn left into the school loop road just past the school sign. Park in front of the school. The main office is to the
left as you enter the front of the building. Please check in there first.
