Asheville
Satellite Office
The Asheville satellite office serves
math and science teachers in Buncombe County and Asheville
City Schools as well as in surrounding areas. Our goal is
to create a community of teachers and schools who use technology
to improve the teaching of science and mathematics. The
office is housed at The
Health Adventure, a science museum in downtown Asheville.
With
generous funding from the Golden Leaf Foundation, middle
school science and math teachers will have access to training
and equipment including laptops, LabQuests, graphing calculators, and
a variety of probes. The use of such
equipment promotes inquiry exploration and helps students
see technology as a tool for learning.

- Don't miss The Science House workshops at the WRESA!
Introduction to The Science House Technologies (Math and Science Grade 6-12)
July 13th 8:30-3:00, Cost $20 Limited to 25 participants
How would you like having free technology brought to your classroom when you requested it? How would you like having your students engaged and excited about their science and math lessons? How would you like free resources and labs to use in your classroom? All this can be yours and more with a day of training courtesy of The Science House of NC State University. Come join us, July 13th 8:30-3:00. We will use laptop computers, LabPros, LabQuests and various probes to explore science and math concepts. After the day's training session, you will be certified to partner with The Science House. This means a class set of the equipment can be brought to your school for a week at a time for your students to use!
If you have questions contact April Spencer or Michelle Benigno.
Safety Sense with Inquiry: A Science Safety Workshop for Teachers and Administrators
July 15th 8:30 – 3:00, Cost: $75
Are you teaching science through inquiry? Join us to see how inquiry labs can be done safely in your classroom. This training session encompasses the development of a comprehensive safety program as well as training in the following topics: components of the OSHA Hazard Communication Program and Lab Standard, Material Safety Data Sheets, Labels and other forms of warning, Chemical Hygiene Plans, classroom safety management plans, and emergency response scenarios. Participants will also conduct sample inquiry activities that demonstrate safe techniques.
If you have questions contact April Spencer or Gina Barrier.
Get Out (Outside That Is!): Introduction to Using GPS Devices (Grades 6-12)
September 15th 8:30 - 3:00, Cost TBA
Are you tired of doing the same old thing in your classes? Are you ready to spice things up and try something new? How would you like having GPS devices brought to your classroom when you requested them? Join us for a day of training courtesy of The Science House of NC State University. We will use GPS devices to explore new and exciting ways to teach science concepts. You will have the opportunity to investigate many types of caches, how to incorporate the technology into your existing lessons, and also have time to create new lessons. No previous experience with GPS units required! This workshop is appropriate for 6-12th grade teachers (especially wonderful for integrated lessons). Physics, Chemistry, Physical Science, Earth Science and Biology content will be addressed and aligned to the NCSCOS. Suggestions for use in other curriculum areas, such as math and history, will also be addressed.
If you have questions contact April Spencer or Michelle Benigno.
- Train-the-Trainer Technology Workshop 08-09
Teachers 6-12 participated in a weeklong workshop designed to help strengthen their CBL, MBL and LabQuest skills as they performed experiments with Veriner probes. These teachers also learned how to trouble-shoot and design their own labs with these tools. After the workshop, they agreed to go back to their schools and spend at least 3 hours training other teachers to use the equipment so even more students could benefit from using the technology!
- Project G.R.E.E.N.- (Growing Respect for the Environment through Education and Nature)
Brush Creek Elementary School has partnered with The Science House to pilot a Place Based Learning program in the mountains. These teachers decided to use their campus to promote scientific literacy, character education and excitement about learning. The teachers are designing units on each of the goals from the NC Standard Course of Study and using different areas of their campus as the learning sites for the study.
- Transylvania County T.I.M.E. Project- (If students are given adequate TIME to engage in true INQUIRY into their own questions, and find that they and their new findings MATTER to others; they will continue to EXPLORE more opportunities in science)
The Science House partners with Transylvania 4-H (Mary Arnaudin) and Transylvania public schools to provide students with year-long inquiry research experience. These students are mentored by scientists in the area and teachers in the high schools.
- CSI TEAMS Project
WRESA's MSP Grant Project that focuses on integrating Math and Science content with inquiry learning for Polk County, Cherokee, Henderson, Madison, Cherokee, Swain, Transylvania, Yancey Public Schools.
