Students in science lab at Fayetteville State University

Cumberland County Schools received a MSAP Grant in 2008. The grant enabled four elementary schools and one middle school to become Schools of Math and Science. They have additional staff and resources (such as Math Out of the Box®, FOSS® and Vernier® probeware) through the grant to enhance their math and science curriculum and provide hands-on learning, enagaging instruction. One high school established a Math and Science Academy. The Academy provides the school with additional staff, specialized math and science courses, and technology-based resources (such as the Vernier® probeware) to foster students abilities in math and science.

Students from these schools are also selected to take part in a summer enrichment program provided by The Science House. This past summer, the elementary students spent a week developing their crime solving skills as they completed 8 forensic activities to find out “who done it”. The high school students spent a week visiting local businesses specializing in math and/or science careers. They also researched a career they were interested in pursuing and presented it to the group on Friday.

Student participating in job shadowing at Cape Fear Valley Health Systems

The high school “Science Frontiers” summer academy was held July 13-17, 2009 at EE Smith High School. The goals of the week were to:

  • Build research and decision making skills.
  • Develop a positive attitude about science and math careers
  • Build self confidence and self-esteem
  • Make critical decisions about future careers

Students visited DuPont Fayetteville Works, Cape Fear Valley Health Systems, Clark Park, Fayetteville State University, and Fayetteville Technical Community College. They also had presentations by College Foundations of NC and Little Guy Technology Solutions.

Students and teachers had a wonderful time and learned a great deal about real careers in math and science. Each student presented their careers providing information about courses needed, where the major was offered, job responsibilities and salary, and even a real job posting for a similar position in NC. Careers ranged from meteorologist to clothing design to computer science. All of the students did an amazing job!
