About The Science House

Who We Are

Print

The Science House annually reaches over 5,000 teachers and over 36,000 students from six offices spread across the state. Our mission is to work in partnership with K-12 teachers and students to promote the use and impact of hands-on inquiry based learning in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

We link the research university to the needs of K-12 STEM education through

  • Student STEM enrichment activities
  • Teacher professional development programs
  • Laboratory technology workshops for teachers,
  • Loans of laboratory equipment,
  • Student research programs,
  • School safety materials and workshops
  • Development of learning materials
  • NC Science Olympiad

The Science House programs are guided by the best research and practices in STEM education. We engage faculty and students at NC State University and other institutions to enrich teachers’ content knowledge and to help students visualize careers in STEM disciplines. In addition, we have led the K-12 outreach projects for several multi-university STEM research centers that are at the cutting edge of their disciplines.

The Science House website distributes information on our programs as well as learning materials to support curriculum standards in North Carolina and beyond. The Science House site is a well-known resource in STEM education with millions of visitors each year from across the USA and internationally.

Located amid the high tech facilities of the NC State University Centennial Campus, The Science House includes 8,400 square feet of classrooms, offices, a teaching laboratory, and a computer-learning center. Regional offices in Edenton, Jacksonville, Fayetteville, Lenoir, and Asheville, NC are hosted by school systems or education agencies and serve their surrounding communities and schools. Science House programs, services, and learning materials have also spread to Virginia, Texas, South Carolina, Arizona and Kentucky.

Our outreach activities are supported by NC State University and by a group of governmental, corporate and private agencies who share our concern for K-12 education. We gratefully acknowledge the contributions of our funders and partners on The Science House website, who are listed on our Partners and Supporters page.
