2008 Invitational Conference on
K-12 Outreach from University Science Departments

funded by a grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund

Information for Presenters

Conference Papers

As in the previous Conferences we will produce a Proceedings volume to record the presentations. The Proceedings have been distributed nationally and we wish to have a strong document that will be referenced in other literature or used by others in development of K-12 outreach programs.

Paper Format

Invited papers should be about six pages (about 2500 words). Contributed papers should be three pages (about 1200 words). We do have some leeway in page counts. As an example, see the Proceedings from the previous Conferences.

The deadline for submission of all manuscripts is June 1, 2008. All papers will be refereed and edited by the editors prior to acceptance for publication in the Proceedings.

Papers should be submitted electronically as a Microsoft Word file. Because the papers will be reformatted for publication, please use simple formatting and eschew Microsoft "enhancements." We can use photos or drawings. If you have questions please check with the editors.

Address for submitting papers: science_house@ncsu.edu

We will have a full Conference schedule. Invited papers are scheduled for 45 minutes (+ about 10min. for discussion). The session chairs will introduce the speakers and inform speakers about the time remaining.

Poster Session

We ask that you send us an abstract of your poster or paper by March 24. The abstracts will be posted on the website and distributed to the participants.

The posters will be displayed at the Conference hotel beginning at 6:00, before the dinner at 7:00 on Wednesday night. Easels and tacks will be provided to hold 3’ x 4’ or 4’ x 3’ posters.

Audio Visual Equipment for Presenters

The following is a list of equipment available for presentations at the outreach conference:

Computer projector, overhead projector, audio tape player, VHS videotape player, flip chart, laser pointer, microphone, PC and Mac laptops, and internet access.

Any computers brought by presenters need VGA output to be connected to the projector. We would prefer to transfer presentations to the PC laptop's hard drive whenever possible to make transitions between presenters less cumbersome. The computers we will have available are the following:

If there are questions about the above or other types of equipment or software, please email scott_ragan@ncsu.edu.
