Class Visits

Can we meet a scientist in person? How?

CERSP scientists are available for class visits. We can come to you or you can take a field trip and come here! Check out some of the feedback we have received from students then read the following questions and answers to find out more information about our visits.

Student Responses: Check out what students have to say about our class visits!

Q: What happens during a CERSP classroom visit?

A: A graduate student and/or faculty member in chemistry or chemical engineering from one of the CERSP campuses OR a Science House graduate student or staff member will lead the visit. The visit can be held here, at The Science House, or at your classroom. The CERSP scientist will conduct hands-on science activities with your students that are safe, fun and interesting. These activities will help students learn about science processes and concepts related to carbon dioxide and polymers. The presenter will also be able to answer student questions about careers in science and university science courses. All of the CERSP scientists who visit classrooms have been trained by staff members of The Science House who are former classroom science teachers.

Q: What activities will you do?

A: We have two kits available to use with students. One focuses on carbon dioxide and the other on polymers. You can choose which kit we will use. All of our kit activities have been classroom tested. More information about each of these is available by choosing "Activities" from the left menu.

Q: Who is eligible to request a visit?

A: Any North Carolina K-12 teacher whose school is in within easy driving distance of one of the CERSP campuses may request a visit. Our NC campuses are: North Carolina State University (Raleigh), University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (Greensboro). Not in NC? If you are in Georgia, near the Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta), we may be able to get a scientist to your campus. There are fewer scientists available in this location so there is a chance that we will be unable to provide you with a visit. Please request your visit and we will see what we can do. Not in NC or GA? We are unable to offer a visit to you. But please, remember there are other ways you can learn about our scientists, such as through "Ask a Scientist." Also please check out our kit activities online and try them in your classroom!

Q: Is the visit free, or does my school have to pay a fee?

A: At present, all of our classroom visits are FREE of charge.

Q: Why do you need pictures?

A: We would like to be able to take pictures at our visits. We use our pictures to help get funding for the following years and for our web site. We have photo permission forms that we would like you and your students to fill out before the class visit. Click below to download the forms. The information on the permission form is for our use only. No private information will be given out about any student.

Photo Permission Form - Under 18 (Please have students complete BEFORE the visit.)

Photo Permission Form - Age 18+ (For completion by teachers and adults before the visit.)

Q: How do I request a visit or get more information?

A: To request a visit, use our online form by clicking the following link: Request a Visit. If you need more information before deciding about whether or not to request a visit, please contact Dr. Bellamy (Choose "Contact Us" below for Dr. Bellamy's contact information).

Q: Is there anything else I need to do?

A: After we visit your class, we would appreciate your feedback. Please click on "Feedback" in the left menu bar and choose "General Feedback" to send us your feedback. Your opinions and suggestions will help us to improve our program.
