Visit Basics
What should I expect? How does a visit work?
- First you volunteer for a specific event. This means YOU
get to choose where you go and what you do. You can find out about
these events through e-mail or through our online
listing. You then volunteer for the event of your choosing by
sending an e-mail to Dr.
Bellamy or by using our online
form.
- Our team helps you prepare. If you need to be trained to
teach any of the materials, we will arrange that with you. If you
are in NC, we can help you gather and prepare materials. If you are
not, we can give you a detailed list of materials and directions.
We can even provide you with explanations and questions for the grade
level you will be working with. If you want to check out some of our
activities, click on "Activities"
in the menu. You will not be left to figure things out alone - just
tell us what you need!
- Go have fun! This is when you actually go on your visit.
You will do the activities with students and their teachers. Talk
to them! Even if the activity seems mundane to you, it is new and
exciting to them! They are thrilled that you are there. Check out
some of our student responses.
Teachers will help you with the activities as well as any assistants
or parents. You can do your visit with another scientist if you need
more help. You will do a great job!
- Return materials. When you finish your visit, please return
all of the kit materials. If something needs to be replenished, leave
a note with the kit. Please clean anything that needs immediate attention.
It doesn't take long to rinse our materials with water and we've made
clean up as easy as possible.
- Report back to Dr. Bellamy. We want to know about what you
did and NSF wants to know too! Send Dr.
Bellamy an e-mail or use the online
"Visit Feedback" form to let
us know about your visit. How did it go? How many kids were there?
What grade/ages? How many teachers? Do we need more materials? Did
you get any new ideas? etc. This reflection process is very important!
- REPEAT! Once you've had one experience, we hope that you
will repeat it many times! If there is anything we can do to make
the process run more smoothly, let us know!
Is English your second language? No problem! We can pair
you with someone for the visit. We want you to be involved too! Let us
know how to help.
Now that you know all about school visits, check out our online
listings to pick out an opportunity to volunteer. If you have
already chosen one, use our online
form to reserve your place!
