Ordering

Polymer Activities

Below we have created a suggested order for completing these activities. This is the order we use when presenting material. We based our ordering on knowledge buildup and lab difficulty. Suggested grades are also beside each activity. Feel free to use the activities however they fit best for your class. You can use one lab or several. Let us know how you used it in your class by choosing "Share With Us". We are always looking for new ideas.

  • Spot The Polymer - All grades -This is an introduction to polymers. Students of all ages are capable of understanding the idea of a polymer. This introduction is a guide that can be modified greatly to fit the age and level of any group of students.

  • Silly Putty - All grades - Students take one polymer and conduct a chemical reaction to get something new, silly putty. The idea of cross linkers is introduced here.

  • Oobleck - All grades - Now we choose a polymer that is not fully understood, cornstarch, and exploit one of its properties to create a non-Newtonian fluid. Students learn ideas about how it might work but are also introduced to a problem with an unknown answer.

  • Diaper Demo- 8th grade and up - Students have already learned that people can change polymers to have specific properties. Now they will explore a particular polymer that is used in diapers. Students evaluate the pros and cons of using this polymer.
