Center Mission Statement:
We use CO2 research to develop and
share scientific knowledge profitably among:
- Students
- Scientists
- Industry
- and Society
for a cleaner environment.
What does that mean?
The National Science Foundation funds the Science
and Technology Center for Environmentally Responsible Solvents and Processes
(CERSP), a collaboration among five different campuses. We are just
one part of this center. We direct and oversee outreach by CERSP to
pre-college (K-12) teachers and students. To put it simply, we are CERSP's
"K-12 Outreach" group.
There are two main teams in the center. The
first is the technical team which consists of scientists who do research
on CO2 and help find ways to make our environment cleaner.
This kind of chemistry is sometimes called "green
chemistry". Often our scientists use carbon dioxide to improve
the production of different materials. To find out more about carbon
dioxide, look at our carbon dioxide
activities by choosing "Activities" from the menu. The
second major part of CERSP is the social sciences team which includes
us, the "K-12 Outreach" group. Scientists and educators work together
to translate what the scientists do into materials that teachers and
students can use. Outreach from our team comes in many forms such as
activities, lab
manuals, school visits,
and teacher workshops. More
information about all of these is available here on our website.

To get information about the campuses
involved in CERSP, choose "Partnering Institutions" from the
menu bar on the left. If you want to find out more about our
scientists, choose "Meet Scientists" from the menu bar
on the left. More about green chemistry
can be accessed by choosing "Green Chemistry" from the menu
bar. You can find pictures and more information about the people that
run the outreach group by choosing
"Meet Us" from the menu on the left.
